The next morning, I got out of bed and mechanically walked to the bathroom to do my business.  It's funny, I don't really look in the mirror as  I walk past it every day, but it's sort of surreal to look in a mirror and see a  dark grey dragon staring back at you.

I noticed I still had the same hair but other than that everything was different.  Same grey eyes but the pupils where slits instead of circles.  I had ears, unlike most reptiles,  but then again I'm not most reptiles.  The muzzle was new,  as well as the fangs and the foot long neck.  I went back to my room and grabbed my tape measure.  7'6" standing,  15'11" wingspan(7'3.5" per wing), and about 4 feet high while on all fours.  My wings here the coolest, mainly the transparent cyan diamonds between the orange claw marks.  My claws where pure black and razor sharp.  I made a mental note to file them down later.  Large white scales covered my chest, each one a shallow V shape, almost like a chevron, with an orange tinge at the sides.  I looked damn cool but, then it dawned on me that I would be like this for the rest of my life.

I was Pretty depressed over the next few days.  I decided to try and break the depression by taking up a new project.  I settled on trying some clay sculpting but I didn't have any on hand so hopped into the car and drove into the city.  I was a fey miles out when the car sputtered to a stop.  I checked the gauges and they all said the car was working fine except one.  The car had run out of gas.  I cursed myself for making such a stupid mistake.  I decided to call Max and have him bring some gas.

I dialed his number and he picked up on the third ring, "Hey Max, listen.  I need you to come pick me up, the car ran out of gas."

"Ok, I'll be there in a bit, but before you hang up, someone is here looking for you, do you want me to bring him along?" he asked.

I thought for a second, "Why not!  Just make sure you bring enough gas to get the car back."

He hung up and I got back in the car to wait for him to get here.

Max arrived and stopped a few feet behind the car.  He shut the engine off before opening the door and getting out.

"Hey Edge."  Max said, "What happened?  I thought we topped off the tanks last time we drove her?"

I wasn't listening, I was too busy trying to get a good glimpse at whoever was in the passenger seat of Max's modified Toyota Hilux.  I couldn't make out any features through the trucks tinted windows, only a vague silhouette cast by the waning light through the back windows.

"Edge?"  Max said, snapping his fingers to get my attention.

"Hm, sorry Max.  Who's in the car?"  I asked.

"Oh yeah, James!"  He shouted towards the truck, "You said you where looking for Edge and here he is!"

Wait, James!?

I watched in surprise as he got out of the truck and true enough, it was my older brother James.  We looked almost exactly the same in appearance or at least, had looked the same.  Dark brown hair, slight tan, skinny with some muscles, but one of the big difference was he had deep blue eyes that seemed to take in every detail.

"Edge?  Is it really you?"  James asked.

"The one and only."  I joked, "How's your paper coming along?"

"Well, I think I'll have to add another sub section for you."  He replied.

James was working on a paper about dragons and the effects of the environment they live in on their personality and appearance.

"You two can talk later but for now, help me with these jerrycans so we can get the car fueled up before it gets dark."  Max said.

We helped him get the car filled up and we where done in no time at all.

After we finished refueling the car I pulled max aside, "Have James follow you home, and take the long way.  I don't want him to see Elsie, and I really don't want him seeing Sam.  I'm gonna fly ahead and make sure that he doesn't see Sam the second he gets in the door."

"Ok, sounds like a plan, but one question first.  Why didn't you fly back earlier and get some fuel yourself." Max said.

I immediately slapped myself in my head, why didn't I do that, it would have made so much sense.  Oh well, you cant change what happened.

"I don't know, I guess it just never occurred to me."  I replied, "jut get in the car and start driving."

He and James got in their cars, he heard the engines rumble to life before the cars began to drive off.  Satisfied that they where on their way I jumped into the air, waiting until I hit the top of my jump before snapping out my wings.  A series of flaps proved sufficient to bring me above the scattered treeline.  It wasn't long until I was landing on the front lawn outside the house.  I entered the house and started calling for Sam but he wasn't anywhere, and neither was Elsie for that matter.

Before I was able to start looking for them, I heard the two cars pull up in the driveway.  The car doors clicked open as they got out, followed bu the solid whump of them closing again.  I opened the front door, watching as they walked up to the door.

"Hey Max have you seen the others?"  I called to him.

"They left a bit ago but i didn't say anything earlier because I thought they would be back by now."  He replied.

"Hmm well either way, come on in James,  I'm sure you have a ton of questions for me."  I said, waving him in.

Max walked past me but James paused just inside the doorway, "You know, you're gonna have to tell Mom and Dad about this sooner or later."

I had been dreading that, "I know I'll probably get around to it when we go down for the holidays.  I don't feel like I should tell them in person than over the... HIT THE DECK!"

I dropped to the floor but James wasn't as fast.  Sam hit him at full speed, sending them many feet into the house.  Sam rolled away and shook his head before looking around the room.

"Oh sorry about that." He said noticing James, "I guess  still need to work on my speed."

James layed there slightly dazed from the impact.  Sam got up and offered his hand to James who gladly took it.  Sam pulled him up and made sure James was steady on his feet before letting go.

"It's ok man, just try and watch where you're going next time." James said, "Wait a sec.  You... Ya... You're a half dragon?"

He stood there rather surprised.  He'd probably never expected half dragons to possible, let alone be seeing one right in front of him.  I could hear James heart rate go up as he continued staring at Sam.

"Sam,  I told you you where going to fast.  Oh, hello."  Elsie said, appearing in the doorway.

"Elsie, this is my brother James.  James, this is Elsie, my girlfriend."  I said, my mouth struggling to form that last word.

It served as a good way to snap him out of his creepy staring, "Oh, girlfriend is it?  Nice choice if i doo say so myself brother." He turned to Elsie, "No offence."

She chuckled slightly, "None taken. Excluding the fact that I chose him more than he chose me."

"Oh ho, is that so?  Well anyways, it's very nice to meet you Elsie."  James said with a bow.

Always with the theatrics

"Well now that you two have met, I'm sure you're dying to know what happened to me and Sam."  I said trying to keep him from embarrassing me more.

We all migrated to the couches and got settled before I got started.  I told him about how I had met Elsie, how she had nearly killed me, how she had been feral, and then how I had somehow brought her back.  Then I got to the part where Sam became a half dragon and James stayed surprisingly quiet.  finally came the part where I became a dragon.  I gave him every detail I could and not only was James listening intently but he had bulled out his iPhone and was recording everything.  I finished up with me waking up at the hospital and flying home.

"Well there you go, that's what happened."  I said, "Now you can sit us down and examine us later though, It's starting to get late and I'm starving."

"Fair enough, I don't think I told you why I was here though.  I was going to ask if i could stay here for a bit.  I wanted to study the dragons in Southern California and I figured that I would stop by and ask if I could stay here." he finished.

"Well I guess so.  You could take the living room."  I suggested.

"Hey wait a second!  Where will I sleep then!"  Elsie protested.

"In my room of course."  I said, "It's about time you got out of the living room."

"Oh, Ok" she said, "That sounds nice."

We cooked up some dinner and watched Sharktopus as we ate.  After the movie we cleaned up the dishes ad decided to turn in for the night.  We moved Elsie's stuff from the living room into my room and got her settled as well as James before I was able to lay down and slowly drift off to sleep.
